In our opinion, using multiple revenue streams is the best way to support yourself while in van life so that you never rely on just one thing - haven’t you heard you should never put all of your eggs in one basket? The same goes for making money - the more ways you can make money, the better!
BLOGGING AND AFFILIATE MARKETING
Many people think that blogging and affiliate marketing aren’t as popular as they used to be, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, it’s how we make most of our money. Our blog posts bring free, organic traffic to our website. A percentage of those visitors end up buying something through our affiliate links, which makes us money month after month. Our program, Creator Club, goes into detail about how to set up your own website (for only $16) and the best affiliate marketing options out there.
YOUTUBE
Once you reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours, you can apply to be monetized on YouTube. When you are monetized, YouTube will run ads at the beginning of your videos and pay you for it every single month. It takes work and consistency to build a YouTube channel, but once a video is up it can make you money for life! Creator Club has a full training on how to set up and grow your YouTube channel.
YOUR OWN PRODUCT/PROGRAM
Creating your own digital product is a great way to make passive income online. You set up the ebook/membership site one time and you can advertise it on your website. Think of what you’re really good at and what value you can provide for other people. This is how we make $5,000 - $10,000 per month - we have two digital programs Creator Club and the Van Layout Guide. Not to keep harping on about Creator Club, but we also show you exactly how set up and build your own digital program.
FREELANCING
Know how to build beautiful websites? Or do you have amazing graphic design or calligraphy skills? Becoming a freelancer through Upwork might be a great fit for you to make money while living in a van. It doesn’t require you to have a “real” 9-5 job since you can work online with clients. When we first started van life, we were doing website design for 3-4 clients per month.
PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY
Love taking photos? Or are you amazing a video? Then you should consider becoming a professional photographer or videographer. We used to shoot 5-10 wedding videos per year and it was a great way to start making money while traveling. When we first started out, we shot videos at a discounted rate to build our portfolio. We also paid for advertising on WeddingWire to get our name out there and find new clients.
SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT
If you’re really good at social media, becoming a social media manager is a great remote job. A social media manager typically schedules and posts on behalf of a business. Most businesses nowadays have a position for social media marketing and don’t need someone full time, which makes it a great remote job position.
WORKING WITH BRANDS
If you have a social media following, you can make money through partnering with brands. Brands are always looking for influencers to create content and post about their product. They typically pay $100 per 10,000 followers that you have. Another way you can make money through brands is just by creating social media content for them, which does not require having a following.
SALES
Many sales positions allow for full time travel. If you’re an extrovert and love connecting with others, then finding a sales job would be a great fit for you. Most sales positions require you to actually make sales to make a commission, so know that you would be personally responsible for creating your own results which means you have to be willing to put in hard work!
COPYWRITING
Are you a really good writer? If so, finding a copywriting position should be a breeze for you! So many brands and businesses are looking for writers to create blog content, help with sales pages, etc. You can find positions through sites like UpWork.
ASSISTANT/CUSTOMER SERVICE
Not only are brands and businesses looking for help with writing, but they also are always in need of customer service and admin support. I used to work part time for a business owner as an admin assistant and she allowed me to work from home or wherever I was! It was a great way to make side income to support my long term goals.
Hopefully these 10 remote van life jobs help you come up with some ideas on how you can support yourself while on the road.
