For this van we used pine shiplap on the walls and the opening of the space we left was 24.25” tall x 40.75” wide.
There are two parts to the window frame:
the inner portion
the outer portion
The inner portion sits close to the window itself while the outer portion is what sits on the wall material.
The inner portion of the frame is designed with clearance to allow for accurate placement of the frame. In this case the inner frame is 23.25” tall x 39” wide.

When building the outer frame or casing I factor in an 1/8” reveal of the inner frame. This gives a very professional look to the window frame.
